Well, I'm not a catholic, but I still have the St. Christopher medal that
the Pope gave me on that visit.
I also made the trip to Capri. A local kid latched on to me as my
"guide." He led me to a place where some girls were standing around,
talking, and asked if any of them would like to marry me. There were, as
I recall, volunteers. I remember visiting a monastery on the Island. The
monk in charge challenged me to a game of chess "which he never got a
chance to play." In my memory, he whipped me, moving nothing but his
knights. Then he presented me with a small bottle of the monastery's
liqueur, as a consolation prize.
On the ferry boat back to Naples from Capri I found myself sitting next to
a delightfully attractive young woman who turned out to be an English
movie actress. The Bay was glassy smooth, nevertheless she managed to get
seasick.
I did the trip to Rome. Several of us did the night spots, but we did not
totally ignore history and culture. At some point we grabbed a cab and
dashed over to take a couple of pictures of the Colosseum. (I got back
there with my family in 1970 and shot several minutes worth with a new
movie camera. Later I discovered that there was no film in the camera.)
                    Regards,
                         Jackm
